The Chance Vought Corsair was one of America's mostsuccessful single-seatfighters of W.W.II, being produced inseven variants from the F4U-1through to the F4U-7 (the latterbeing produced specifically forFrance and used in Indochina).Designed by Rex Beisel and IgorSikorsky, the F4U-1 was first orderedin 1938 as the result of a U.S. Navyrequirement for a high performancecarrier aircraft, and made its maidenflight on May 29th 1940. Its large,1850hp Pratt & Whitney DoubleWasp 18-cylinder radial enginedemanded an immense propeller,which meant that a gull wing had tobe employed to provide thenecessary ground clearance for theprop' whilst keeping theundercarriage length and groundangle to a minimum.
