The Mitsubishi Eclipse comes in many variants, including a 4 cylinder, turbo-charged, all wheel drive version sporting over 210 horsepower. The turbo-charged version is the most desirable, as it offers the most attractive platform on which to build a lightweight, high tech super-car killer. By simply changing the turbocharger, changing the exhaust system and adding some carefully selected electronic engine management devices, these cars can produce easily over 350 horsepower. The Eclipse used in this movie hints at the car's true potential. When stripped of non-vital accessories, the power to weight ratio is more heavily biased towards performance. With the right driver, such a car can out accelerate most V8 muscle cars of the 60's and still achieve 25 mpg.
"Behind the scenes" Movie Trivia: Originally, an early script showed this car as a Toyota Supra. This was changed so that the character "Brian" could own a more radical car for the later half of the movie.
